When it ships: Ontiqo will be new, so Windows SmartScreen may show an "unrecognised app" warning the first time you run it — that is Windows noting it has not seen the program before, not a verdict on it. Only download Ontiqo from here. Ontiqo is distributed only by us, through this page and the release page it links to. Nobody else is authorised to host or bundle it, so a copy from anywhere else is unauthorised — it may have been altered, and it is not covered by our support or terms. It runs on a normal PC.
Even a ten-year-old laptop qualifies, as long as it has at least 16 GB of RAM and a four-core processor. A more powerful machine gets the same answers, sooner: speed is the only thing hardware buys, and quality is never traded down to fit.

Ontiqo works in the background for as long as the reading takes, so it needs a machine that can stay on. A big collection is days of reading — an enormous one can be weeks. For scale: a 50,000-file collection is a three-to-four-day read on a recommended-spec desktop. On battery it pauses out of courtesy.
The internet is used for three things: fetching the download, reaching any cloud storage you connect, and the optional lookups you switch on. The reading and understanding themselves never need it.
The first run
What to expect, hour by hour.
In the first minutes
You choose what Ontiqo should look at, see a count of what it found, and reading begins. The processing view shows real numbers from the start — and from this point nothing on your disk is moved or changed until the day you commit.
In the first hours
Files become searchable as they are read. A quick first pass gives everything a rough label early, so the collection starts making sense long before the deep reading finishes.
Over the following days
A big collection is days of background reading, and Ontiqo says so rather than pretending. Once it has seen enough, it works out your collection's own structure and the proposed tidy-up appears — then keeps improving as the rest is read.
The whole time
It behaves like a polite guest: low priority, quiet, and it steps aside completely when you are presenting, gaming or on battery. Your machine stays yours.

Is it really free?
For personal use, yes — genuinely. As many of your own computers as you like, no time limit, nothing switched off, and there is no locked "pro" version. A licence is only needed when Ontiqo is used for work — a business, an employer, an institution or a public body. The licensing page explains it in two paragraphs.
Will it move or delete my files without asking?
No. Reading, browsing, searching and previewing the proposal all happen without touching a single file. Files move exactly once — when you commit a layout you have seen — and every commit is reversible, with an undo record kept in your own Documents folder, where uninstalling can never delete it.
Two piles are set to be cleared out when you reorganise in place: extra copies, and data programs made for themselves. The commit sheet shows both counts and asks about that on its own — and what goes, goes to your Recycle Bin. Build the organised copy elsewhere instead and nothing is deleted at all.
Do my files get uploaded somewhere?
No. All reading and understanding happens on your own computer. Your file content is never sent to us — the licence says so in writing, not just this page.
What about Mac or Linux?
Not today. Ontiqo is a Windows program, built and tested as one. If that changes, this page will say so plainly.
